Karena Lam is a talented actress and artist who is also actively involved in the field of curating. She has served as an ambassador for the French May Arts Festival. In 2020, in recognition of her long-standing commitment to promoting French art and culture, she was awarded the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government, acknowledging her significant influence in the arts.
Since 2019, Karena has gradually slowed the pace of her life, returning to a more authentic state of being and devoting herself to ceramic art. Through the tactile experience of working with clay, she has embarked on a journey of deep self-reflection and inner dialogue. For her, clay is more than a creative medium; it is also a form of companionship and reflection. Through the repeated processes of kneading, shaping, and firing, she has learned to embrace unexpected changes and imperfections, discovering the purity and freedom of the creative process.
Karena’s practice is centered on “sensation” and “authenticity.” She transforms the nuanced emotional sensitivity developed through acting into a keen observation of material and form, allowing warmth and soul to emerge naturally from her work. She has collaborated with brands such as Louis Vuitton and participated in numerous group exhibitions and solo exhibitions, gradually developing an artistic vocabulary of her own.
Among her works and projects, the “24-Hour Ceramic Marathon” holds particular significance, reflecting her profound understanding of time and the creative process. At SIDE SPACE Gallery in Hong Kong, she engaged in uninterrupted ceramic making for 24 consecutive hours, with the process open to the public. From day into the late hours of the night, people continuously entered the brightly lit space to interact with her, stay for a while, and experience the flow of the creative process. More than simply an experiment in making, the project became a form of performance art that gave “time” a tangible presence. Through sustained concentration, she constructed vessels with clay coils and her hands, while allowing viewers to witness the most authentic and unfiltered state of creation.
In Karena’s practice, objects become a medium connecting everyday life with the inner self. Whether a cup, a bowl, or a vase, each carries traces of time, emotion, and the process of making. Through these objects rooted in everyday life, she invites viewers to rediscover their relationship with the world around them and to encounter the essence of what lies within.
For Karena, creating has never been about pursuing a perfect result, but rather a process of time, patience, and self-understanding. Whether through the 24-hour Ceramic Marathon or the experiments and breakthroughs explored through her exhibitions, she continues to face herself with honesty. Through repeated encounters with clay, she gradually shapes forms that embody the contours of life itself.
