Siao Yuan Hou

Artist Siao Yuan Hou received her master's degree from the Department of Arts and Design at National Dong Hwa University and founded Shiti Kiln in Fengbin, Hualien. She has long been dedicated to wood-fired ceramic practice, arts education, and cultural promotion. Siao Yuan received the Gold Award in the Three-Dimensional Art Category of the Hualien Art Exhibition and has exhibited extensively in Taiwan, China, and Macau, fostering artistic exchange across different regions through her creative practice.

Committed to ceramics education and community-based cultural engagement, Siao Yuan organizes and leads workshops and educational programs that integrate ceramics, traditional crafts, and traditional brewing techniques. Through these activities, she encourages participants to explore local culture and everyday wisdom while building connections between artistic practice and Indigenous cultural traditions. For many years, she has remained deeply engaged with the Hualien–Taitung region, using art, education, and cultural exchange to preserve local cultural memory and promote the continuity of regional traditions.

Siao Yuan has also participated in projects associated with the East Coast Land Arts Festival, using her open studio as a platform for cultural exchange. By incorporating locally sourced hand-drip coffee experiences into her programs, she brings together art, craft, and everyday life, highlighting the cultural character of Taiwan's East Coast and contributing to the preservation and promotion of local heritage.

Central to Siao Yuan's artistic practice is the philosophical concept of "The Relationship Between Clay and Self." Clay symbolizes the accumulation of time, memory, nature, and emotion, while the self represents the evolving consciousness continuously shaped through the creative process. The dialogue between clay and self reflects the ever-changing relationship between inner emotions and the surrounding environment. Through natural elements such as mountains, the sea, and the land, her works explore the relationship between humans and nature, carrying the emotional memory of place while revealing the profound interdependence of life, landscape, and culture.
