American artist Anthony Carrillo attended San Diego Mesa College with a major in Fine Art. He served as an assistant to artist Simon Levin, studied the construction of a train kiln and a soda kiln under Simon’s guidance, and took part in the firings of train kilns and anagama kilns, gaining extensive hands-on experience in wood firing. Through these experiences, he has developed a deep understanding of the dramatic and expressive potential that wood firing offers. In addition to his studio practice, Anthony has teaching experience in wheel throwing, demonstrating a well-rounded and evolving engagement with the field of ceramic arts.
Anthony’s work emphasizes refined craftsmanship, expressed through soft, rhythmic forms and meticulous surface treatment. His vessels exhibit dynamic gestures that extend upward and shift in posture, creating a lively sense of movement and vitality. Through the rich and varied effects of wood firing, he builds layered textures and tactile depth across the surfaces of his pieces. These nuanced surfaces invite viewers to explore each angle, discovering new details and engaging in a tactile and imaginative dialogue with the work.
